Frequently asked questions
How does plant identification work?
Take or choose a photo of your plant and the App uses AI visual recognition to identify the species and summarize its care needs. Clear, well-lit photos of leaves and overall shape work best.
Why do I need an internet connection?
Identification, health check-ins, and chatting with Nick are powered by AI services in the cloud, so those features need a connection and your consent before data is sent. iCloud backup and restore also need a connection and an available iCloud account. Your saved plants, photos, and reminders remain available offline.
How accurate is Nick's advice?
Nick's identifications and advice are AI-generated and for guidance only — they can be wrong. Please use your own judgment, and double-check anything important, especially whether a plant is toxic to people or pets.
What is included in Free and Pro?
Free includes up to three plants, one user-started health check per day, and five user messages to Nick per day. The first assessment created when you add a plant does not use the daily health-check allowance. Pro removes these limits and lets you create automatic iCloud backups while your subscription is active. Existing backups remain available to restore if Pro expires.
How do iCloud backup and restore work?
Open Settings → iCloud Backup, sign in to iCloud, and turn on Automatic Backup. Complete snapshots are stored in your private iCloud database and appear in Backup History. After reinstalling, use Restore from iCloud during onboarding, or return to the same Settings page. Creating backups requires Pro; restoring an existing backup does not.
Will a restored backup merge with what is already on my iPhone?
No. A restore replaces the plants, photos, conversations, and reminders currently in GardenerNick on that device. Review the backup date and contents before confirming. Backup and restore are not live multi-device sync.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and select GardenerNick. You can also reach this from Settings → Subscription → Manage Subscription inside the App. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Pro until the current period ends.
I paid before but Pro isn't showing. How do I restore it?
In the App, go to Settings → Restore Purchases (also available on the upgrade screen). Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used to purchase.
How do I delete my data?
Deleting individual plants or conversations removes that local data, and deleting the App removes all local App data. Existing iCloud backups are separate and are not removed just because you delete the App or turn backup off. To remove one, open Settings → iCloud Backup, choose the version, and tap Delete This Backup. Our AI backend does not keep a cloud database of request content; other providers handle retention under the policies linked in our Privacy Policy.
Which permissions does the App ask for, and why?
Camera and photo access are used to photograph or choose plant pictures. Location is optional and fills in your city so advice can match the local climate; your precise coordinates are not sent to our backend or Open-Meteo. Reminders is used only when you choose to add a care item to Apple Reminders, and Notifications is used for local care alerts. Each system permission is requested only when first needed and can be changed in iOS Settings. Cloud AI consent can be reviewed or withdrawn under Settings → Cloud AI & Data in the App.
